‘Freedom of Choice 1’

CRW_8494-Edit‘Freedom of Choice I’ speaks to the illusion of choice characterizing much of contemporary life.

In ‘Freedom of Choice I’, an iconic American snack is given substance- figuratively and literally- by being cast in bronze. The molds used for the different elements of the piece each varied slightly, creating subtle but significant variation between the repetitive elements. The cupcakes, for example, appear identical at first glance but actually are not. These infinitesimal differences represent the gamut of choice available in many areas of life today.

Bronze is a material which for me has kitsch and fine art associations in equal measure. Since I want to evoke both in this piece, bronze seemed an appropriate material for ‘Freedom of Choice I’.

Media: Bronze, Wood     Dimensions: 9″ x 48″ x 7″     Date: 2011
