‘Evolution’

‘Evolution’

‘Evolution’ explores the feedback loop between the human mind and the built environment. The mind shapes the physical environment through designing buildings, cities and roads. Less obviously, perhaps, these in turn impact human consciousness. Each historical era generates characteristic physical forms which imprint the minds of its time.

The heads comprising ‘Evolution’ are loosely based on archaic medical models of the brain. The usual folds and fissures on the brain surface are replaced with settlement patterns from different periods of Western history. For instance, a maze-like street pattern represents the Medieval era, the classic grid-iron 19th century America, a suburban street plan the 20th century, etc. Each ‘period’ is represented by a different, approximately life-size head with exposed brain. The heads are hand-built, glazed earthenware.
